Tell us about the inspiration behind Lylou the Label?
Lylou the Label is inspired by the transcendent beauty of wild natural landscape made with sumptuous plant-based fabric. Nature is the artist and nature is our muse. Our first collection Terra offers beautifully crafted pieces in an earthy colour palette, and is inspired by the poetry of nature. Sand, sea foam, moonstone, rainforest green mixed with ochre, terracotta and clay pay homage to the ancient beauty of the Australian earth.
Lylou is a 100% plastic-free, compostable and vegan fashion brand inspired by romance, nature and the French Boheme. The Terra collection presents a selection of feminine, refined women's apparel that creates an effortless elegance and feel incredible to wear.
As Founder of Lylou the Label, tell us about yourself and what inspires you?
I am a french designer and I now live permanently in coastal Australia. I have a background in environmental justice and have worked previously with Indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon and in Western Australia in environmental projects. I am passionate about the protection of mother earth and wish to create a label that is thoughtfully gentle to the earth.
Inspired by the poetry of nature and my french heritage, I have created a relaxed yet refined line of womens apparel, with a focus on feminine silhouettes, using sumptuous eco-luxurious fabrics.
SUSTAINABILITY
Our garments are exclusively made with sumptuous plant-based fabric and all our packaging is biodegradable making us a 100% biodegradable, vegan and plastic-free brand.
We embrace the slow fashion movement, which values quality and authenticity. Our products are ethically made in Indonesia, where we work with slow production schedules, fair wages and a low carbon footprint. Our brand is dedicated to conscious and elegant women. We design apparel with charm and character thoughtfully gentle to the earth.
At Lylou, we are passionate about protecting our oceans from microplastic pollution. We have chosen to work exclusively with natural fibres to bring awareness to the impact of microplastic pollution caused by synthetic clothing. Our pieces have been designed to offer an empowering and conscious choice for our customers.
What is your vision for your brand and it's position in the Australian market?
I wish to bring greater awareness about the issue of microplastic pollution caused by synthetic clothing. Washing clothes releases half a million tonnes of plastic microfibres into the ocean every year, equivalent to more than 50 billion plastic bottles. 35 percent of the microplastics that enter the ocean come via synthetic textiles. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibres are all forms of plastic. Washing synthetic garments releases tiny plastic microfibres into our oceans, finding their way into the diets of marine life and our food chain.
We wish to empower Australian women to protect the ocean from microplastic pollution through their consumer's choices.
Efforts are being made to reduce plastic pollution but we also need to recognise that our clothes are a part of the problem. Saying no to synthetic fibres contributes to the protection of our environment and marine wildlife, how empowering is this! By purchasing natural fibre clothing, you’re actively reducing the amount of synthetic clothing entering our oceans. We believe in buying less, but better quality clothing and only washing when necessary!
At Lylou the label you will only find natural fibres in all our collections. Our first collection "Terra'' is exclusively made from luxurious plant-based sustainable fabric such as Linen, Bamboo, and Cupro Tencel (made from recycled cotton waste).
What creative work has you excited right now?
The most exciting part of my work is to discover and work with sumptuous plant-based fabric and earthy tones and to pay homage to our beautiful planet. I also absolutely love creating sensual piece of clothing that exudes femininity while remaining refined, elegant and comfortable to wear.
What advice do you have for emerging designers?
My advice is to bring yourself into your designs, your dreams, your desires, your story, and your values. It is by offering a piece of yourself in your designs that you will love your craft.
What can we expect from Lylou the label in the near future?
Our plan is to continue to create sustainable plant-based designs while drawing on the feminine circle of creativity, sensuality and expression. We are currently creating the next collection and are in love with the contrast of Australian White, green and Earthy brown Clay colours. We are carefully handpicking sumptuous plant-based silky fabric as well as hemp, and organic cotton which we will use in our next collection.
How do you see the fashion industry shifting and what more can we do to elevate our focus on slow fashion and design?
I am very excited and delighted to see the shift that is happening in the fashion industry toward a greener future, there is a growing number of conscious customers that now exclusively create a conscious wardrobe and support the independent sustainable labels.
What do you love to do most to relax?
Being immersed in nature is what I live for. Dipping my toes in the sea, catching the sun and remembering to breathe. I also, practice gratitude meditation. When I create my design I like to play instrumental world music.
